Ford recently reincarnated the Montego nameplate, but not the Cyclone optioned muscle car name.
For those who don't know where it came from, here are a few images of some of the previous Cyclones, whether Comet or Montego based.
Although sold under the Mercury nameplate, you should know it's still a Ford at heart,
The Montego and high-performance Cyclone version began life in 1967 and continued through 1971.

1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler
promotional photo used on 1983 book.
This is a pre-production car seen in many period magazines with experimental hood scoop, full width fiberglas front spoiler without mounting bolts, 6 inch wheels, and no wheelwell moulding trim.
Possibly taken at Ford proving ground.
Interesting that this scoop was just tacked on, when if you look up at very early design photos it seems they already had the design somewhat figured for the production scoop. Possibly that the Spoiler would have this big scoop only? Or maybe they were running behind on production of the grille insert or something? dunno. |
